Fourth Graders Boycott Cafeteria Food

Fourth graders at Nuestro Mundo Elementary School in Madison, WI started a group called Boycott School Lunch (BCSL) last fall after conducting some "gross experiments" in the school cafeteria, like measuring how much grease they could squeeze out of a hamburger. They had been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement in history class. Their teacher, Joshua Forehand, showed them a movie about the Children's Crusade that took place in Birmingham, AL in 1963, and this sparked the students to organize a peaceful protest for healthier cafeteria food.

Hyperlocavore Yard Sharing

Did you know that 60% of North Americans under-use their yard? Recently a number of Internet-based groups have begun to set up networks to allow folks who want to garden to find others who have unused yard space. Yard sharing social networking sites are on the rise, with one better known site being Hyperlocavore: A Yard Sharing Community at http://hyperlocavore.com/

Hyperlocavore is a site run by Liz M., who resides in a rural community in Oregon and is currently tending her mother's rich backyard garden plot. A hyperlocavore is a person who aims to eat as locally as he or she can, consuming what grows in one's immediate neighborhood whenever possible. Yard-sharing, or an agreement between two or more people to share yard space and resources for the purpose of producing food, has become quite popular with locavores as it is in line with the ultimate goal of eating as locally as possible.

Shocking New Report Reveals that In the U.S. More Than 3.5 Million (one in six) Children Under the Age of Five Are Food Insecure

One in six young children live on the brink of hunger in 26 states in the U.S., according to a new report issued today by Feeding America. The rate of food insecurity in young children is 33 percent higher than in U.S. adults, where one in eight live at risk of hunger.
