Food Crisis, Which Crisis?

By Sam Urquhart for GNN
June 2, 2008

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is currently holding an emergency summit in Rome that will be focusing on the current global food crisis, but rejuvenating and protecting agriculturalists does not seem to be on the agenda.

In the past couple of months the attention of the world has been directed at the issue of food availability and production, but poor people across the world have felt its effects for years.

Solving the food crisis: the causes and the solutions

June 2, 2008
Headlines in recent weeks are ablaze with reports of food riots. Seemingly overnight, the world went from cheap food and generous surpluses to food prices spiking 80 per cent and countries banning exports of food in an attempt to stave off shortages. Without massive, immediate injections of food aid, 100 million more people in the Global South are poised to join the swelling ranks of the world’s hungry. This is a very curious prospect for a food system that just registered its largest grain harvest ever.

17th of April: International Day of Peasant's Struggle

Farmers mobilize around the world and propose solutions to the food price
crisis

(Jakarta, 17 April 1008)
Small farmer's organizations and their allies are celebrating today the International Day of Peasant's Struggle commemorating the massacre of 19 landless workers, women and men struggling for land in Brazil 12 years ago. Today dozens of groups, communities and organizations in about 20 countries around the world are organizing farmer's markets, conferences, direct actions, cultural activities, demonstrations... to defend their right to food and to feed their communities.

Thousands of People Protest NAFTA and defend Food Sovereignty in Mexico

By Angie Rodriguez

On Thursday January 31st, thousands of people took the streets of Mexico City as part of the mobilization to demand the renegotiation of the agricultural chapter of the North American Free Trade Agreement. In what was called March in Defense of Food Sovereignty, several labor unions, university students, teachers, civic organizations and members of the opposition parties, joined dozens of farmers organizations such as the National Confederation Of Farmers (CNC) and the National Union of Agricultural Workers to protest the elimination of trade barriers on corn imports.

FAO insists on food as a human right

World Food Day theme seeks renewed commitment to the Right to Food

16 October 2007 - FAO today called for a renewed commitment to guarantee the right to food for the world's hundreds of millions of hungry people.

Speaking at the World Food Day ceremony on this year’s theme, "The Right to Food," FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf asked: “if our planet produces enough food to feed its entire population, why do 854 million people still go to sleep on an empty stomach?” At the same time, Diouf said that “a right is not a right if it cannot be claimed.”

National Family Farm Coalition Farm Bill Policy Statement

Public policy must be fashioned to protect and strengthen the future of our food supply, environment, public health, and rural communities. A new U.S. farm bill and international trade agreements must reverse the current policy that uses taxpayer dollars as a substitute for income not provided to farmers through the low prices paid by multinational corporations for products from our nation’s farms and ranches. Family farms must help prevent global warming and be an essential source of renewable energy with respect for local control. Low commodity prices and high taxpayer expenses combine to exacerbate the nation’s budget and trade deficit, create cheap feed that encourages destructive industrial production of livestock, and spread the curses of unhealthy diet and low farm income abroad while destroying economic opportunity on family farms and in rural communities here at home.
