Food First Statement on War

More Peace Action Resources

Food First stands categorically opposed to the war on Iraq, and to the range of conflicts, covert and overt, in which the U.S. government is currently embroiled. As an organization dedicated to ending hunger, we cannot stand by and watch while the U.S. war machine gears itself up for another outburst. War hurts everyone (except the war machine itself).

For the people in the third world, on whose heads U.S. bombs rain, the outcome of war is invariably hunger, destitution and poverty. The U.S. embargo and continuous bombing of Iraq since 1991 have resulted in the deaths of over 500,000 children. We also stand opposed to the vast diversion of social spending that maintaining the U.S. military requires. Congress has requested $16,458,000,000 for next year's military spending. This is equivalent to sending 2,380,000 children into a Head Start program.

We know what makes a healthy and functional society. Militarism is a cancer that eats away our future. Please take the time to inform yourself, and become active, in the anti-war movement. For a future without hunger.
